When you may need a crown
- After a root canal treatment, especially on back teeth
- A tooth that is cracked or broken
- A tooth with a very large filling
- To improve the shape or colour of a tooth as part of a smile makeover
When a bridge is an option
A bridge fills the gap left by a missing tooth, using the teeth on either side as supports. It is fixed in place, so you do not take it out. A dental implant is the other main option for a missing tooth; at the checkup we explain which suits you better.
How it works at our clinic
Checkup and X-ray
We check the tooth and the root, and whether it needs any treatment first.
Preparation
The tooth is shaped under local anaesthetic and a measurement is taken.
Temporary cover
If needed, a temporary crown protects the tooth while the final one is made.
Fitting
The crown or bridge is fixed in place and your bite is checked.
Cost
The cost depends on your teeth and the treatment you need. After the checkup you get a plan with the exact cost, before anything is done.
Questions patients ask
How much does a crown cost?
It depends on the tooth and the material. You get the cost at your free checkup.
How long do crowns last?
With good care, many years. Brush and clean between your teeth, and come for regular checkups.
Does getting a crown hurt?
The tooth is numbed while it is prepared, so you feel pressure rather than pain. It may feel sensitive for a few days.
Crown, bridge or implant: which is better?
It depends on the tooth, the teeth next to it and the bone. We explain the options and their costs after the checkup and X-ray.
