Why a tooth may need to come out
- Decay or a break too large to repair
- A wisdom tooth that is stuck, keeps getting infected or causes pain
- Advanced gum disease that has loosened the tooth
- To make space for braces, as part of your treatment plan
Surgical extractions and wisdom teeth
Simple extractions are done by our dentists. Surgical extractions, such as wisdom teeth that are stuck in the bone, are done by a specialist surgeon who visits our clinics.
After an extraction
- Bite on the gauze for the time we tell you, to let a clot form.
- Do not rinse, spit hard, smoke or drink through a straw for the first day.
- Eat soft, cool food and chew on the other side.
- Some swelling and soreness for a few days is normal; ordinary painkillers usually help.
- Call us if bleeding does not stop, or if pain gets worse after two or three days.
How it works at our clinic
Checkup and X-ray
We check the tooth and its roots, and whether it can be saved.
Numbing
The area is numbed with local anaesthetic.
Removal
The tooth is removed gently. You feel pressure, not sharp pain.
Aftercare
You get written aftercare advice, and we tell you when to come back if needed.
Cost
The cost depends on your teeth and the treatment you need. After the checkup you get a plan with the exact cost, before anything is done.
Questions patients ask
Does a tooth extraction hurt?
The area is numbed first, so you feel pressure rather than pain. Afterwards some soreness is normal for a few days.
Do all wisdom teeth need to come out?
No. Wisdom teeth that are healthy and in the right position can stay. We suggest removing them when they are stuck, keep getting infected, or damage the tooth next to them.
Why would braces need extractions?
When the jaw does not have enough room for all the teeth, removing some teeth makes space to line the rest up. If your plan needs it, the decision is made by our senior doctors and explained to you first.
What should I replace a removed tooth with?
Depending on where the tooth was, a dental implant or a bridge can fill the gap. We explain the options at the checkup.
